Getting So Much Done

Just had to drop in for a minute to let you know what I’ve been doing 🙂 I’m getting so many things done that I wanted to do – but couldn’t find the time.

I have a blog that was created just to promote my novel – Lilah and the Locket (http://outerbankslilah.blogspot.com) and it generates hits on my website every month. But I wanted a blog where I could blog about the next book in the series – you’re welcome to take a look and get a sneak peak at my next novel – http://capehatterasseries.blogspot.com

I also have wanted to move the author promotional interviews to a new blog and since I learned how to export and import blog content on Blogger — its very easy and quick — that gave me the perfect tool to move those interviews – http://authorpromotion.blogspot.com/

Then, I’ve noticed that there will be many things that I want to add to Book Promo 201 – but that would hold up the release of the book forever – so what about creating a blog where I can post new things as I discover them. Get Your Feet Wet By Hosting Someone on a Tour

Have you heard about virtual blog tours? If you read the Promo 101 Virtual Blog Tour blog – then you are familiar with the idea, but you might not really understand what happens “behind the scenes”. There are several ways to learn more. I have a FREE e-book available for download. The link to download the e-book is in the top left corner of each page of my website – www.nikkileigh.com. There is also a download link on www.virtualblogtour.blogspot.com in the top right corner of each page.

Anyone who is curious about how a virtual book tour works can be a host for other tours. I’m always looking for tour hosts. If you know anyone who would should be added to the notification mailing list about new tours, email nikki_leigh22939 at yahoo.com.

Being a tour host provides promotion for the blog host. If you are looking for a free and easy way to generate some additional traffic to your blog, you should consider being a virtual tour host. Participating will also give people an idea of how part of the tour works. People who are interested, are welcome to contact me for more information.

These are some of the questions I would ask a person who wants to be a blog host. There are always other options, but these ideas will give you some examples of ways a person can host a person during their tour.

• Name and email for the blog contact
• Website or blog address
• E-mail address to send a PDF of the book for the host to read if needed
• How many visitors does the blog get weekly or monthly and their Google page rank
• How many members are on your forum or message board (if using a forum)
• What sort of books or topics does the person want to host – fiction, non-fiction, specific genres or topics?
• Are there are sort of books, products or services would you prefer not to host? If so, what types.
• Do they want to do an interview, a review or something else? (I encourage creativity.)
• Would you prefer a guest host about a specific type of information
• Do you have a place to host a chat and would that be productive for the person who is touring

What is a Virtual Blog Tour?

Definition of a Virtual Blog Tour

Simply, a virtual blog tour is a cyber “tour” which includes various blogs, websites, radio shows, newsletters etc. These sites usually have themes that are included in the book and are promoted on the tour. This “tour” gives authors the chance to reach many people as they travel the blog-o-sphere.

A tour contains a set of blog, website interviews, reviews or guest posts etc that are posted on a series of sites during a set amount of time. Various blog owners host you and many ask you interview questions about your book or they may request that you write a piece about a specific part or element of your book.

Virtual blog tours are a wonderful alternative to a “live” bookstore tour. A bookstore tour can be very expensive, consume a lot of your time, take you away from your family and job and there is no guarantee that it will be successful. A blog tour can be done from home and in your pajamas if that’s what you prefer.

In these days with sky rocketing gas and travel charges, is there a better and more eco-friendly way to promote our books, or other products and services? Each day we hear the price of gas has hit an “all time high”. Those words don’t seem to mean much anymore. Unfortunately, any “all time high” will be obsolete within a day or two. We each battle the cost of driving and traveling every day. So, what is an author to do if they want to do a book tour to promote their book? Fiction Imitates Life – Van Gogh Missing from Heist – and in Miniature

Police were still searching Monday for three masked men responsible for the daring heist of four Impressionist paintings Sunday from a private art museum in Zurich. The paintings, valued at $163 million, included works by Cezanne, Degas, Monet and Van Gogh. The burglary follows on the heels of an earlier theft, also in Zurich, of two Picassos on loan from Germany.

In a case of fiction imitating real life, the search for another missing Van Gogh is the focus of “SEARCHING FOR A STARRY NIGHT,” A Miniature Art Mystery by Christine Verstraete, coming in May from Quake/Echelon Press, LLC. The missing painting is a miniature replica of Van Gogh’s famous work, “The Starry Night.”

What if you could offer a convenient online promotional avenue which would let potential readers talk with you? One issue with online book purchasing is that you cannot pick it up and flip through the pages. When I go to the store, I like to be able to ask questions. This is an advantage of dealing with a brick and mortar store. You can go into the store and ask the salesperson all your questions. That is lacking with most online businesses. How can you overcome this problem? One of the easiest ways is through an online promotional message board.

Online promotional boards are a great place to hold chats. Readers can come to the web page or respond through their email. It is very easy to answer questions or post some questions for your readers. This is also a wonderful and free way to distribute your newsletter, if you have one. The board can help you create a mailing list for your readers and fans.

Effective Promotion With Online Chats

An effective way to promote your books is through the use of online message boards. These boards can also be used for chats with writers and readers. This is a great way to get acquainted with potential readers and other authors. If you want to discuss the release of a new book, reviews, an appearance or any other event or news, this is a great way to share information with others.

Promote Your Author Message Board

You can invite readers and authors to join your message board. This gives them a chance to ask you questions. Visitors can post questions which you should answer promptly. You can also schedule specific times to be online and chat with your visitors. These can be once a week or once a month and for an hour or more at a time. This will show your willingness to communicate with your visitors.

Learn To Educate Readers About Your Books

This is a great way to build your credibility and to educate your customers. There are many uses for the message board in between chats. The photo files can display pictures of your book covers, pictures of the setting and possibly pictures or sketches of how you envision your characters. The files section can hold details about your novels.

This can include:

  • Character Bios
  • Setting Details
  • Additional background that doesn’t appear in the story.
  • Reviews for your books.
  • Comments from readers.

There are many uses for the files and photo sections. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.

Book Promotion Requires Time

Keep in mind that it takes time to build up the membership on your message board. It also takes time to get people to join your chats. However, the beauty of the message board is that its available twenty four hours a day and seven days a week. People can visit at any time to read the messages and to learn from you. Your visitors will also be able to read old chat messages at any time.

You can set a signature block for each message that is posted. It would be effective to include your book titles, release dates, availability, website address and your contact information. This is subtle, but would be sent out with every message. A long drawn out message could turn people away from your site, so keep it concise.

That makes the idea of online promotion more interesting, doesn’t it? I’m sorry to be the one to tell you a sad truth. Effective promotion and marketing requires more than flipping a switch or wishing thinking. You will see many advertisements which claim to bring untold numbers of customers to your site – for a low monthly fee. They might, but the chance of these being people who actually need or want your books is slim. This is because they do not generate targeted, quality leads.

Authors Need To Invest Time in Promotion

The truth is that promotion takes time, effort and skill. There will also be some trial and error involved. Nothing works exactly the same for two or more authors. Any promotion must be suited to your books and must be effective with your website. This is one of the many reasons why a cookie cutter marketing method doesn’t work.

Learn That Book Promotion Is Not Instantaneous

Another truth is that book marketing is not an instantaneous thing. It takes time to put your plan in motion. Time is required to implement the elements of your marketing plan and they will take time to work. Search engines take time to crawl your site and then list your site. It isn’t impossible just don’t expect great results overnight
