Defense Strategy to Put Trayvon Martin on Trial Has Successful Precedents

Author and Nationally Syndicated Columnist Earl Ofari Hutchinson’s new book,  America on Trial: The Slaying of Trayvon Martin (Amazon Kindle) examines the issues of race and the criminal justice system in the Martin case. Hutchinson contends that the defense strategy to put Trayvon Martin not George Zimmerman on trial has been used successfully in the past. Defense attorneys in highly charged racial cases where the victims have been young African-Americans have time and again turned the tables and painted the victims as the culprits.

Hutchinson notes that defense attorneys used this tact in the Rodney King beating case in Los Angeles, the Sean Bell police killing in New York, and the killing by a transit police officer of Oscar Grant in Oakland.

Hutchinson says that prosecutors have a daunting job trying to overcome the negative racial stereotypes. Two Penn State University studies on racial perceptions and stereotypes, one in 2003 and a follow-up study in 2008, found that many citizens are likely to associate pictures of blacks with violent crimes, and in some cases where crimes were not committed by blacks they misidentified the perpetrator as an African American. Defense attorneys always play hard on any prior misconduct, bad behavior, or any criminal conduct by the victim.

Zimmerman’s attorneys, Hutchinson adds, have relentlessly played on this theme about Martin.  This feeds into the stereotype of bad behaving blacks, and that the victim somehow was responsible for the accused using deadly force.

About Travels in Elysium It was the chance of a lifetime. A dream job in the southern Aegean. Apprentice to the great archaeologist Marcus Huxley, lifting a golden civilisation from the dead… Yet trading rural England for the scarred volcanic island of Santorini, 22-year old Nicholas Pedrosa is about to blunder into an ancient mystery that will threaten his liberty, his life, even his most fundamental concepts of reality. An island that blew apart with the force of 100,000 atomic bombs… A civilisation prised out of the ash, its exquisite frescoes bearing a haunting resemblance to Plato’s lost island paradise, Atlantis… A death that may have been murder… And an archaeologist on a collision course with a brutal police state… As the legend’s tumultuous clash of freedom and tyranny, honour and corruption plays out in the Aegean, Nicholas is forced to confront the possibility that Atlantis is less a physical place on the map than an ingenious metaphysical device engineered by the philosopher himself, one capable of revealing the true nature of reality and the human condition. Can it be understood before it engulfs them all? ‘This extraordinary novel, part murder mystery, part metaphysical thriller, kept me guessing until the very last page. The intellectual duel between the troubled hero and his ruthless mentor is mesmerising. William Azuski’s treatment of the Atlantis legend is completely original and I have rarely read a novel with such a strong sense of place. The bizarre landscapes of Santorini and the daily lives of its people, both ancient and modern, are vividly evoked. Anyone who enjoys the work of Umberto Eco, Orhan Pamuk or Carlos Ruiz Zafón should try this book.’ — Geraldine Harris, author, Egyptologist, and a member of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford.

Something to Consider – some reviewers rush to grab the book when they see “Mystery / Thriller / Atlantis” and later realize it is challenging fiction in the classical mold.   About William Azuski – William Azuski was born in the United Kingdom, and is of British and Yugoslav descent. Travelling widely through the Mediterranean since childhood, his frequent sojourns in Greece included several months on Santorini in the 1970s, an experience that provided firsthand experience for this exceptional novel’s local setting. Writing as William Miles Johnson, Azuski is also author of the critically-acclaimed The Rose-Tinted Menagerie, an Observer Book of the Year (nonfiction), and Making a Killing, an end of the world satire, both titles recently republished by Iridescent. All Female Jury Could be a Plus for Zimmerman

The Hutchinson Report

Press Advisory:

All Female Jury Could be a Plus for Zimmerman

Author and Nationally Syndicated Columnist Earl Ofari Hutchinson whose new book,  America on Trial: The Slaying of Trayvon Martin http://www.amazon.com/America-Slaying-Trayvon-Hutchinson-ebook/dp/B00D5IGLIY  examines the issues of race and the criminal justice system in the Martin case. Hutchinson notes that based on informal studies and the experiences of defense attorneys in major criminal cases an all-female jury could be a plus for George Zimmerman.

Hutchinson presents this summary of those findings regarding all-female juries:

* Women are more compassionate than men in most criminal cases, but they can be ruthless when it comes to sex crimes.

* Men tend to be harder on defendants.

* Women are sympathetic to mistreatment. As one seasoned criminal defense attorney noted, “Like black people, they are sensitive to injustice because they have had a lot of it put on them.”

Hutchinson adds that majority female juries came under much scrutiny and criticism for the acquittal verdict of O.J. Simpson. The criticism was not just that their decision to acquit Simpson allegedly was a race biased decision but also that female jurors were supposedly more sympathetic to the defense.

This may or may not be the case with Zimmerman, Hutchinson assures, but in an emotional trial with much Zimmerman’s defense attorneys relentlessly trying to paint Zimmerman as a victim of Trayvon Martin, the jury could be problematic for the prosecution.
